Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini an entrepreneur. Her parents are of Italian, German (from the paternal grandmother), Irish and Scottish descendance. Linda was the eldest child of California is a native of her home in the San Francisco Bay Area. She studied at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama and started her career on the British television series Just William (2010). After her successful performance in the role of Lady Rose MacClare on the period drama Downton Abbey between 2012 and 2015, her first breakthrough role was in the movie fantasy Cinderella in the year 2015. James was then cast as the Countess Natasha Rostova on the TV adaptation of War & Peace in 2016. James has appeared in many films including Baby Driver (2017) and period dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society 2018 and The Dig 2021, as well as the musicals Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) and Yesterday (2019). Her portrayal of Pamela Anderson in the biographical show Pam & Tommy (2022) was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
